Six Laser Vision Correction Centers Close Down
4.30.02
All of us are concerned when we consider surgery on a critical part of our body. And our eyes provide us with one of the most important senses - sight. We want to know we are getting the best care possible and that our doctor will continue to be there for us over the next 2 years, 10 years, or even 20 years.
Laser vision correction is an extremely popular procedure that can free most people from dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Since 1995 when the FDA approved the procedure, doctors have treated over 3 million satisfied patients. With popularity growing, a number of providers formed companies to take advantage of the patient interest. Many centers opened advertising unrealistically low prices. Other centers used questionable techniques to reduce costs, such as heavy reliance on technicians, re-using blades and supplies, and flying surgeons from city to city.
In the last 15 months in Northern California, at least six providers have closed their facilities, leaving thousands of patients without the comfort of knowing they can see their doctor if the need arises. In some cases patients had prepaid for surgical services they never received.
Selecting a Surgeon
Choosing a surgeon is the most important step you can take when considering laser vision correction. We recommend that you consider the following criteria:
- Does the surgeon have a high degree of training (a fellowship in laser vision correction) and experience and take the time to customize the treatment to your particular needs?
- Does the facility have equipment with the latest technological advancements and safety features?
- Will you see your surgeon throughout your treatment? Is the staff specially trained to provide you pertinent information and answer your questions, allowing you to make an informed decision?
- Have you spoken to patients and are they satisfied with the doctor and their care?
- Does the doctor have strong ties to the community and will he be available to you over the long term?
Look for a laser center that demonstrates its focus on quality care, not just claims it. If you have uneasy feelings about a doctor or his facility or feel the information you received is insufficient, check-out another facility. Being informed about the procedure and completely comfortable with your surgeon is critical. Centers that provide high quality care will continue to be recommended to family and friends and will be there for you in the long run.
