Why do I need an eye exam?
Many people – even those who are health-conscious - don’t always think about having a regular eye exam. But routine eye exams, like routine dental check-ups, can help prevent long-lasting health problems. In many cases, the beginning of vision problems is not always accompanied by obvious symptoms. By the time symptoms appear, irreversible damage may have been done.

I’m not at risk for eye disease. How often should I have a routine exam?
The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Optometric Association recommend that adults between the ages of 18 and 60 years with no signs of vision loss or risk factors for eye disease have a routine eye exam every two years. Adults ages 61 and older are advised to have an eye exam annually.

Eye disease runs in my family. How often should I have an eye exam?
Annual eye exams are recommended for patients of any age with conditions that put them at risk for eye disease, including diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of eye disease such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. 

What if I have an eye condition that needs monitoring or treatment?
The doctors at Furlong Vision Correction not only offer comprehensive annual eye examinations, but are also qualified to treat a full range of eye conditions and diseases – from relatively simple conditions like dry eye to sight-threatening diseases like glaucoma. We can monitor or treat the following eye conditions or diseases:

Cataracts (no-stitch surgery)
Glaucoma 
Diabetic eye care
Growths in and around the eye (moles, warts, styes, cysts, tags)
Dry or watery eyes
Eye abrasions, infections or allergies
Eye injuries
Flashes and floaters (spots or shadowy shapes that pass through your field of vision)
Macular degeneration

Will my medical insurance pay for my exam?

Medical insurance plans will pay for eye exams that are necessary to monitor or treat medical conditions or diseases of the eye. These types of exams are the same as other medical expenses and subject to the same deductible and co-pay requirements. For these exams, we can bill Medicare and most PPO plans. A routine eye exam for healthy eyes is not covered by medical insurance (unless a medical condition is discovered during the exam) but should still be part of your preventive health regimen to ensure long-lasting eye health.
