Save Your Vision Month Is a Reminder
of Importance of Regular Eye Exams
- Eye testing ensures healthy vision and can detects diabetes and other dangerous diseases -
For Immediate Release: March 13, 2006.
CAMPBELL, Calif. - March is the American Optometric Association's Save Your Vision Month and Furlong Vision Correction, a leading LASIK eye surgery center, is reminding Silicon Valley residents of the importance of receiving regular eye exams. One eye exam can not only ensure healthy vision, but also help identify diseases such as diabetes, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataract development and retinopathy, a common eye disease that is a precursor to heart failure.
"According to the American Diabetes Association, more than one third of the population who has diabetes doesn't know it, leaving them at risk for heart disease, kidney damage, stroke and other health problems," said Dr. Michael Furlong, head refractive surgeon at Furlong Vision Correction. "An estimated 96,000 people are living with diabetes in Silicon Valley and it is one of the most significant ways people can lose their vision as they age. A simple eye exam is one of the ways to detect this disabling disease."
The identification of diabetes may lie in the eye blood vessels. By dilating the pupil, an optometrist can see potential changes to the eye blood vessels, which can signify various stages of diabetic retinopathy. Left untreated, it can cause blindness. Age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in North America, can also be detected with an eye exam. This disease typically has no symptoms until vision is lost, so regular exams are critical.
Furlong Vision Correction recommends eye exams at least once every two years until age sixty, then every year thereafter. Contact or glasses wearers should have their vision checked every year.
